Anthropogenic Mineral Collection

In Anthropogenic Mineral Collection, Los Angeles-based artist Colleen Hargaden catalogs mineral byproducts of human geological intervention, spanning from the Industrial Revolution to the present. Evolving out of mines, furnaces, dumps, and nuclear test sites, these specimens point towards often obscured global systems of production, systems which are implicated within the production of the work itself. Comprised of still life “portraits,” microscopic views, and data regarding the origins, sources, and elemental makeup of 17 anthropogenic minerals, this publication is one manifestation of a larger project by the artist, taking the form of a geologic field guide.
