Content Aware,
Cursed Image

In Content Aware, Cursed Image, Brandon Bandy alters the self-portraits of an online extremist and domestic terrorist, using them to draw parallels between the history of cursed images, developments in generative artificial intelligence, and Photoshop’s Content Aware fill tool. Looking at text-to-image generators as literalizations of Vilem Flusser’s concept of the apparatus which encodes “technical images,” Bandy points to how cursed images continue pushing further from indexical representations, veering deeper into abstraction.
